FAQ
Q: “Are these trails only for experts? I’m intermediate and my kids are beginners – will we be in over our heads?”
A: Don’t worry – we built Shepherd Mountain to be fun for all skill levels. While we do have some of the gnarliest double-black runs around, we also offer a brand new beginner-friendly trail (opening Spring 2026!) and easier intermediate routes like Trolley Track and Element 26. Or start out at the lake on the Intro Green & Blue DH trails. Our staff and local riders are super welcoming; they’ll happily point you to trails that match your comfort zone. You can progress at your own pace – no judgment, just stoke.
Q: “What if I don’t have a downhill bike or full gear?”
A: Come as you are, but with a helmet! A sturdy trail/enduro bike will handle most of our runs (just make sure your brakes are in good shape – you’ll need them). We do recommend a full-face helmet and pads for the tougher trails. If you’re missing something, our on-site WHEELHOUSE has pads, gloves, and other essentials, like spare parts, available for purchase. Plus, all our regulars (family, really), are experienced riders and are always happy to chat about setup or give advice, so you feel confident before you drop in.
Q: “Is there more to do than just biking? I want to make a weekend of it.”
A: Absolutely. In fact, many visitors turn a day at Shepherd Mountain into a full weekend adventure. Within a 15-minute drive, you’ve got 3 state parks to explore – hike to waterfalls, go kayaking, or relax by the Black River (just 30 minutes away). Our team can hook you up with maps and local tips. In the evenings, kick back in town with live music and good food (ask us about the best spots – we love our local community and it shows!). So bring your family, bring your buddies – there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy while you’re here.
